So, I'm grading tests (quickly, since class starts in less than a half hour, and I was just handed this task), and the section I'm working on is about what the student's do in their free time.
One student wrote something like:
I like to listen to music in my free time. (check)
I have many CDs. (check)
My favorite singer's group is Pornography Graffiti. (Waaa?)
It's a band, apparently.
Of course, after seeing the ubiquitous playboy logo carried by so many elementary school girls, reading that one of my middle school girls likes Pornography Graffiti shouldn't surprise me at all.

And people worry about where the American culture is headed. Hey, I have an idea! Let's invade Japan and spread religious conservatism. No wait! I mean, democracy. No wait! Damn.
ReplyDeleteJapan is already fairly religiously conservative, just not Christian. It's already democratic (sort of). It is not yet English Speaking (technically), so a girl might like Pornography Graffiti and remain unaware of what that translates into, as an American might laugh at the Chinpokomon episode of South Park and remain similarly unaware.
ReplyDeleteWell, that's true. I remember when I lived in Hawaii, there was a point in time (very early on, of course) where it was hilarious to point at someone and say "chiisai chinpo!" It was quite the insult back then. I should start saying that to people here. -)
